this excerpt from Zen and The Art of Motorcycle
Maintenance. “You see things vacationing on a Motorcycle in a way that is completely different from any other. In a car you’re always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don’t realize that through the car window everything you see is just more TV. You’re a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame. On a cycle the frame is gone. You’re completely in contact with it all. You’re in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming. That concrete whizzing by five inches below your foot is the real thing, the same stuff you walk on, it’s right there, so blurred you can’t focus on it, yet you can put your foot down and touch it anytime, and the whole thing, the whole experience, is never removed from immediate consciousness.” Whoa, heavy stuff. |

I read that book at least once every year and I get something new out of it each time. There is so much to that book and so many levels of thought and understanding.
My personal favorite quote - "We're making good time now, with the emphasis on good rather than time. Once you make that switch in emphasis, everything changes." Right now this one is especially relevant to me, "Slowly you realize that that one screw is not worhtless. It is in fact worth the entire value of your bike, for without it your bike won't run." I refuse to read Lila - his second book - becuase it would appear to undermine the most essential truth of Quality - that it can not be defined because it is all of reality. |

I have read this book over and over, and I can even remember reading this particular line. Something happened to his engine right? And his friends on the BMW are getting pissed because he's driving slow as to not tear up the engine. Aw shit - now I have to read it again. You're absolutely right though. Every time I read it I get something else out of it. |
