Default Heat problems

With the coming of summer down here I started researching ways to keep the bike cooler in traffic. As most know the late model Harleys have a heat issue and hence a program in the ECM that slows the idle and finally drops a cyl to help keep it cool. Then I researched oil coolers, but none had a fan to help at low speeds. I ran across this while searching and thought it was worthwhile to mention it on here.

I noticed a drop in operating temperature when I switched to Syn3.
I wonder what combining the Syn3 with the cooling fans would drop the temps to?

Heh, I did not notice any drop when switching to Syn3. Although with 95", 10.5 compression and big cams, that might be the culprit. The fans on the oil cooler running at slow speeds and in stop and go traffic, would probably lower the oil temps quite a bit. Will post back here in a few days as I have the Premium oil cooler coming, and will install the fans and thermostat to run them when I put it all on.

I tried this once and it seemed to work well. Mount a couple of fans from a computer chip cooler. They run on 12v DC, they are quiet and don't need a lot of juice to run them. and they fit the coolers very well.

Hell, I pretty much have a stock TC and I have issues with the heat management system cutting on moments into heavy traffic.

I run synthetic oil - no noticeable temperature drop.
I have a PCIII tuned to about 13.3/13.4 a/f ratio.

So I've already done the status quo to reduce heat. And just minutes into traffic on a warm day - not necessarily hot - the temperature is climbing.
I'm adding an oil cooler to both bikes this week to see what that will do. I know without the fans it's not going to help in traffic.

If it's not doin' better, I may add the fans.

A solution that works for me is move to a small town where there is no traffic. Hope that helps.

but seriously folks, that is what bugs me about HD oil coolers, no fan. Let us know how it turns out.

LOL!

Well, got someone to "liquid cool" the really hot stuff between my legs. :didisaythat:

Just lookin' to get something to cool down the bike.

I know the oil cooler itself may not do a lot, especially sitting in traffic, but chances are the oil will be cooler before I hit traffic, and the oil cooler will still give the oil extra surface area to dissipate some of the heat.

We'll see.

I do have to say the HD Premium Oil Cooler for the softail comes with a chrome cover that has to be glued on. I'm not a big fan of that.

I have installed two fans behind the oil cooler, and have them switched to a accessory switch on the nachele. Have not been in traffic yet to test them, but they push about 104 cu ft of air per minute, so they have to help. Will let you know after I get to test them.
