Default #1 recall

Subject: Safety Recall Campaign 0141(H-D 2009 & 2010 Touring CVO and Tri Glide Front Fuel Tank Mounts)

Dear Harley-Davidson Dealer:

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on certain model year 2009 and 2010 Touring family vehicles (including CVO touring and Trike products) built June 6, 2008 through November 19, 2009. On these vehicles, the fuel tank front mounts may distort in reaction to severe frame damage from a frontal collision. This condition may cause a fuel leak at the weld of the front bracket to the tunnel. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire, which could lead to injury or death of the rider.

We have voluntarily declared this a defect related to motor vehicle safety (Campaign 0141) to allow us to formally recall all affected motorcycles. The remedy is to install a left and right hand brace provided in the recall kit, between the front mounts and the frame. These braces are intended to reduce front mount distortion during the crash conditions described above. A service bulletin outlining the repair and credit procedure will follow within ten days. Based on the schedule our supplier has provided we expect to begin shipping repair kits on or before the week of December 14, 2009. Please reference the Service Bulletin for a detailed description of the defect.

In the interest of the safety of our mutual customers and as required by law, you may sell but NOT DELIVER any motorcycles equipped with the defective fuel tank front mounts to your customers until the remedy is completed. Please refer to h-dnet.com on the Service Page/Safety and Product Campaign/Open Safety Campaign Instructions and the Safety Campaign and Open VIN Lists in the Service Toolbox for an updated list of affected VINs for this recall. Select the appropriate campaign number link (0141) to view any outstanding vehicles involved.

In accordance with Federal regulations administered by NHTSA, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. will provide notice to all owners of record of affected products with direction to bring the vehicle in for the recall service.

Sincerely,

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc.
014

Did you happen to notice if the tread was backwards to the directional arrow? I have a buddy down here in Florida who just got his front tire replaced because the tread was facing the wrong way. I was at the dealer with him when they pointed it out.

Cheers,
Speed

I have seen the tread problem you speak of. Also keep in mind that the 407 is discontinued and being replaced by the 408.
I was told also that cupping was the problem with the 407. Replacement at the dealer is wear pro-rated to determine a price. But if you mention a wobble then it becomes a safety issue and the total cost is paid for by HD.

That's interesting because my buddy had a bad wobble and the dealer installed a True Track stabilizer a month before they ended up replacing his tire under warranty for having the tread face the wrong way.

Cheers,
Speed
