I used to have the Harley Automatic Primary Chain Tensioner installed on my 05 FXST. After some hard riding were I accelerated hard and shifted quick, I started to hear a whining sound coming from my primary. Coolmaker and I opened the primary to find the noise and lo and behold my chain was tight as a banjo string. No deflection at all. Apparently the auto adjusting wedge had jumped a couple of notches from riding hard. It was starting to cut deep grooves in the shoe. We took out the automatic one and replaced it with the stock shoe and problem solved. Note: I am going to install a Baker DD6 gear set later so I will need the stock shoe anyways. Just wanted to let you guys know about this possibility of the adjuster over tightening itself.

Ya, I have heard to this happening before but also heard from many how great they are. I'm putting one in today as a matter of fact.
I think the spring loaded Hayden M6 is better if your a "quick and heavy on the throttle" kinda guy but the Harley one works great for just overall crusin. And I'm a crusier kinda guy. Time will tell, but I know what to listen for. |

When I go back in for my Dyno on my new mill at 500 miles (I'm at 79 right now... damned snow) I'll inspect my shoe for wear. I've been running the HD unit for about 3500 miles. I'll keep ya posted.

Squirrels is not the only one I have seen do this. Mungo had one do it last year at Daytona too.... Mine did the same thing. So to hell with it, just adjust once in awhile and all is okay...

Well, since I'm cracking open my primary to get at my starter clutch problem I thought I should put one in but now I'm thinkin I'll return it and install the M6. It sounds more trouble-free overall.
