Default S&S 510G Cams Installed

Coolmaker and I did this install on my softail. Total job time took us 6 hrs with phone calls, drinks, and food. Not bad. We used the Jim's tools and that makes a huge difference in ease of installation. We eased the oil pressure up by stretching the bypass spring. We did this install because I was worried about te stock cam shoes being chewed up at 17000 miles. Well they weren't terrible but they were on the way. Lots of pits and slivers chewed out of them. The new cams start pulling from down low around 1800-2000RPM and keep on pulling to the rev limiter. All in all, a lot more power and more pull. I would recommend this as a great addition to an 88.

good report Squirrel.. RamMedic is going to help me do this same instal at his place this summer just before the Dragon III. Do the gears make more noise than the chains did?

The difference in noise is pretty minimal in my opinion Doc. You definitely won't notice it when you're on the hammer if you have a set of pipes.

Doc the gears are quieter in my bike but we have heard that a lot of it results from installation and alignment. Mine is quiet as a church mouse.

Did your gas mileage change any with this mod? It sounds as if the gears are the way to go. Where did you find the 17000 mile figure? Is oil pressure/delivery an issue on the TC88? When you stretched the spring, do you have any idea how much the oil pressure changed? Thanks for the nfo on the heads and keep us up with any new changes you make.

My bike has 17,000 on it and hearing everyone talk about the cam shoes being in bad shape around 20,000, we decided to change it over to gear drive cams. Good thing we did it. They were in HD specs, but personally I don't like stuff floating around in my oil. Haven't checked the gas mileage yet, as the first tank has been pretty much been spent twisting the wick. I'll let ya know about it.
I learned from my dad a long time ago that oil is the life of a vehicle. Oil pressure at idle only changed by a few PSI but the pressure at riding speeds went up considerably. Before it was at 28-30PSI @ 60MPH now its at 37-40PSI, and when you start accelerating more it goes on up to 50PSI.

We just got the dyno results yesterday. My bike has 78HP and 82 Ft-lbs Torque. Not bad with 510gear drive cams and a stock 88 engine. I am very happy with the results.

Oil delivery is not an issue on the TC88, however, the piston cooling jets don't work until you have about 32 psi, soooo if you up the oil pressure you get more cooling to the bottom of the piston skirts. I stretched the spring .0050 to get it where we wanted it.
