Starting a Database

On another site that I belong I had suggested we start a database (secure database) that would have names, addresses, and numbers so as we travel the country we could easily connect with those close by. I had even volunteered to manage the database but nothing ever came of it. I look at this as a great tool if someone is close to St. Paul and breaks down they could call me and I could help.

See I had built my own database from info you had shared with me then last year I fried my hardrive and lost all of the address & phone numbers so having that info elsewhere for me would be handy.

Being this is a new site and the numbers of members small just wondering if folks think it a good idea. But it would have to be really, really secure so that none of this gets in the wrong hands.

I don't know, maybe this is just to risky. I would love feedback on this idea and if it's even possible without risk to our info.

We could do a supporter's only forum with regions where people could list their info if they want to participate. Would that work?

That sounds good Speedman, I would have no problem with supporters. Just not the general public. :wink:

If we want to do this, now is a really good time to get it in place so as this site grows we came manage the growing database.

I see this as more than just at the supporter level after all it's pretty easy to just pay your 25 bucks. I think there should be some sort of log in or password protection so those that enter know they are being monitored.

Also maybe some sort of search engine so If I'm planning a trip that takes me close to, let's say Batavia Ill. I could find out who is close by so I could stop on by for a cup of coffee. :lol:

I might be able to do this with the content module, which is currently providing our PayPal pages, Forum HOWTOs and the Tech Zone. Let me see what I can do with it for perms.
