Well, I survived another weekend with Wrecker and god damn did we have fun! Wrecker and I tried to piece together the whole weekend yesterday so I could put together a ride report, so I think I got the full story now - ya know how sometimes ya just, well, fuck, forget things - all age related of course...
So here's my take on the weekend: I flew up for the run and arrived in Chicago about 8pm - Wrecker and Thors met me at the airport and we started back to the house - Wrecker had made sure there was a cold beer waiting for me as soon as I got in the truck to head home - classic Wrecker hospitality as always! BS'ed and told stories all the way back. Back at the house found scootertrash and soon Rhino showed up so we all just hung out, drank some cold ones and BS'ed the night away. Saturday was one hot mother - hotter in IL than in TX. Wrecker and Liz had the coffee pot going and friends start gathering at the house and soon we head over to the Batavia Bowl - cool little joint, downstairs is a combination bar/bike shop so we get everything set up for the run, unload all the prizes and get those set up and start registering people for the Poker Run. Liz did an amazing job putting together all these baskets for the raffle prizes - absolutely top notch! I believe we ended up with around 90-100 riders, so a good turnout. Wrecker headed out with some of the first riders to slam the run and get back, but we all head back until the crew was all together. Met up with bfred and wife Nancy and Swill for the first time - all top notch folks and we had a great time. Atch came in for part of the run but had to leave in the middle for family obligations - always good to see Atch. Slice and wife Sharon came out for part of the run - good to see them again as well. Once all gathered, we headed out with JeffyD and Dawn leading the way - they're the locals and knew the route. But they also needed to get back, so they split of after the second stop. Well, that left all of us with a set of directions and no fuckin' clue where we were - Swill had picked up a passenger (lady who wanted to ride and her husband didn't want to do the run) and she knew the roads, but then more of her friends came along, so she moved to that group. Well, this is where Rhino earned the award for getting us lost. Talking to a Goldwing rider (first clue) who tells him of a shortcut to the next stop and given the heat, we were willing to shave off a few miles. Now this same guy had previously been tagging along with us and we all watched as he decided to stop traffic for us to cross an intersection, but does it (1) when we clearly have a red light, (2) there is a car in front of us waiting to turn left. But he just moves out into the interstion like a dumb ass - OK, clue no. 2 - he just weren't that bright to begin with. So we take this fella's advice, get a bit lost, but ewnd up where we're supposed to be and get back on track - no problem. Finish up the run and back to Batavia Bowl for the party - pull p[oker hands (none of us did very well there) and get the raffle tickets selling - well, our little group ended up with a pretty substantial portion of those tickets - close to 140 or 150 tickets between us (6 tix for $5 - you do the math) and Wrecker starts calling numbers - suffice to say about half of those baskets that we brought over ended up going home with us - scootertrash made out like a bandit! Well the beer is flowing, the party is rockin' and some crazy motherfucker (rumor is he was in from Texas) opens his mouth and tells the pres. of DuKane ABATE that he'll match dollar for dollar any cash donations made in the next few minutes (then seeing a twinkle in wrecker's eye, add the caveat that there is an upper limit). Well that netted us another nice chunmk of change and damn near every time that fella turned around after that somebody was putting a fuckin new cold beer in his hand. Well the band was cooking, the beer was flowing, but we all know the best party is gonna be the one over at Wrecker's - so he heads to the house and we all follow in time. Let's just say it was another classic wrecker party. Everybody was having a great time and I have no idea what time it was all over, I just know that I was the last one to head to bed. Sunday morning Thorsblood headed out around 5 am to beat traffic around the lake back home to Michigan - and no, I did not get up to see him aff - but Wrecker and Liz certainly did - sent him with a belly full of coffee and wishes for a safe trip. Ended up with Wrecker, Liz, scootertrash and I at the house. Wrecker and Liz went on a cleaning mission and by 10 am you'd never have know there was a party there the night before. Spent a lazy Sunday with Wrecker and Liz - took a short ride out the Blackberry for lunch, but other than that just relaxed and recovereHeade back to the airport around 6:30 or so only to find my flight was delayed until 10:15, but I did finally roll in about 2 am to the house. BTW, Wrecker has that damn Roadking dialed in tight! Sumbitch can jump out of the hole like a shot, damn bike pulls like a fuckin' freight train and just simply flies down the highway - Speed and Cool - I think y'all are gonna have a hell of time if ya go toe to toe with this bike - just a friendly warning! So, Wrecker, once again, you're an amazing individual - he opened his home to me and even lined up a bike for me up there. He and Liz were fantastic hosts and I love y'all! Scootertrash was a great passenger and just an all around great lady - always like seein' her and spendin' time with her. Rhino - great to finally meet and thanks for the Chicago HD t-shirt! Thosblood - always good to see you again as well - be sure ya thank the family for lettin' ya join us for the festivities! Sorry I didn't see ya off, but not sure I'd been asleep very long when ya left and I know I was still drunk! bfred and Nancy - great to finally meet y'all as well and thanks for the warm welcome! Swill - good to meet you finally as well - great job leading us home after Rhino got us lost! Atch, Slice, and Sharon - good as always to see all of you, even if it was for only a short time - I appreciate y'all taking the time to come by while I was in town! ANd then there's the rest of the IL gang - Chris, Favio, JeffyD and Dawn, and many, many others. I always feel welcome and right at home with all of ya and thanks again for the great hospitality! This was a great weekend and all for a very worthy cause. I had the privilege of knowing Jan Rose before she passed and she was one classy, loving, caring person who went out of her way to help others and work to educate new drivers to look out for bikers. Seeing all those folks out for the day and raising the money they did is a great tribute showing how much Wrecker and Jan are loved in that community. Jan, may you rest in peace - your candle still burns strong among us. |
