Former Cowboys QB Carter arrested on DWI charge

02/27/2009

Associated Press

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter was arrested early Friday on drunken driving and marijuana possession charges in South Texas, authorities said.

Carter was pulled over in the Mission area for failing to signal a right turn and the arresting officer observed bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, said Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Johnny Hernandez. Carter's blood-alcohol level tested at 0.14, above the state's legal limit of 0.08, Hernandez said.

The 31-year-old Carter was charged with misdemeanor possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana after the drug was found in his car, Hernandez said.

Carter was arraigned Friday morning and being held in the Hidalgo County jail, said Sgt. Juan Reyes. No information on an attorney for Carter was available, Reyes said.

Carter was the Cowboys' starting quarterback when they went 10-6 and reached the playoffs in 2003, their first season under coach Bill Parcells. But he was released in training camp before the 2004 season.

He started briefly for the New York Jets before poor play and drug-related arrests ended his NFL career. He played in the Arena League before a brief tryout last year with the Miami Dolphins.

The marijuana possession charge was at least the third for Carter since 2006, when he was arrested in the Dallas suburb of Irving. He was arrested a year later in Shreveport, La.
