Default Im new an searching for what to get

First ill start out with hi im josh. Im new to the forum but have been around bikes alot of my life. My dad had a 77 lowrider,74 sporty, 84 sporty and a few others i cant remember (before my time). I would like to get a big bike but im looking to get mostly a sportster cause i dont have alot of cash to spend. I love the old bikes lik 69 an 70 etc but there right hand shift. What year would i be best to get? An also im open to suggestions would i be better off with an EVO? 5 speed trans? I remember all my dads biker friends didnt like them. What is bad about the evo's?

Just over all what do you think i would be best to get?

Nice to meet everyone! And i appreiciate all the help i can get

Welcome SE. We mostly ride newer bikes. That is what I would recommend. The older models like you are talking about require an excessive amount of maintenance. If you have the skills, time, patience, and money go for it though. You really aren't going to save a whole hell of a lot anyway. Might as well buy a newer Sporty for around 4K or 5k if you look hard enough and be patient. You aren't going to do a whole hell of a lot better than 4K for much anyway. Then when you want to ride it, it cranks and you take off. Keep up with the normal preventative maintenance and ride.

That is my $.02

I agree with Gzr, unless you have lots of patience stick to the newer bikes. Is this your first bike? What are you planning on doing with it? If your planning on touring the Sporty is not the way to go.
Welcome to the site by the way.

Welcome Josh! Sounds like we might be seein ya on the road soon! I also agree with GGG, and BP. When it comes to Harley's, older isn't the way to go. But it's going to be your ride, so get whatever you think will make you feel good in the wind

I was looking for a newer one but i got a smoking deal i couldn't refuse. Everything i get i strip down to make the way i want anyway so i found a project. Its a 1954 kh (sportster) Hardtail,Springer front end raked out. Its pretty wild looking. I know its probably not going to be the most comfortable. But it should be a fun winter project and be real neat when its done. Ill get some pics and post them.
