Default The upgrade. 2005 FLHRI.

I've learned a lot about engines over the past year. This is the first of four dealerships that I've worked at that had a Dyno. I've seen FXDL's turn 136 HP, an FLHRI turn 124 HP and a VRXSE turn 165.

First, my bike's performance history. I bought it in December of '04 and had the S/E Pro (now extinct) slip-ons installed. I used the S/E air cleaner and the $149 remap. It ran OK but on the lean side.

Fast forward to September '06. New dealership. With a Dyno. I was persuaded to try the SERT as the parts manager so that I could walk the walk, not just talk the talk. It was amazing. I gained 5 HP. I hate the fact that for two years I told people that the $149 shit was OK. I just didn't know any better.

Now it's January '07 and I can't take it any more. My wife tells me that for my birthday I can get a new paint job or engine mods. I don't mind the Black Cherry, so I start my research.

I had such a hard time making a decision that I just waited. And waited. Then a month later I get an opportunity to buy a complete engine with a 95" big bore kit installed for $2400.

That was just the beginning. I wanted to keep my cases with the matching VIN so I made a deal with the service manager to trade parts for labor.

At the end of the day, my bike's done. It's running a 98" Revolution cylinder and piston kit, S/E HTCC heads (non-ported), S&S 510G (geared) cams and a Horsepower Inc. 48mm throttle body.

Initial pre break-in Dyno runs posted 79 HP at 3,000 RPM.

I'm still running my S/E Pro slip-ons but I intend to experiment until I break the 100 HP barrier. With the history of Dyno maps available it looks like I'll need to run 2-into-1 so I may just bypass the Rinehart stage. I ahte to say it but the tradition side-by-side exhaust that I've loved for so long just ain't gonna cut it in the pursuit of more horses.

I only posted this preliminary report at SM's request because this story won't be finished until I see that magic 100.

And sorry, no pics. I'm running the parts counter while all this is going on in the back. Heh, if you could trade for labor, wouldn't you?

The only other bits and pieces that aren't really performance related but are mod related will be posted when I'm done switching shit around. I have a ton of stock stuff if anybody wants to make me an offer. It won't take much.

I'm thinking you will be above 110 on both numbers.
