Last year the Lone Star Rally in Galveston, Texas used radio frequency identification (RFID) chips in parking passes to track individuals as they moved through the rally grounds in specific areas where cameras captured their actions. The Lone Star Rally website informed rally goers that “the Chip technology will allow us to pinpoint you and produce a DVD of the entire rally event with personalized footage of you and your bike on the Strand!” Sales of DVDs went up 800%, but the back lash from the biker community caused them to discontinue its use. On their home page they stated “It seems that people have either not seen our explanations, misunderstood how we use the technology or just hate it! We love our riders and don’t want to use anything they don’t like so, for these reasons, we are canceling the use of any RFID technology at the Lone Star Rally.” Still, according to the Christian Unity Newsletter, some rally goers were unaware of the use of this technology and feel their 4th ammendment rights may have been infringed upon.
