Cool story.
SCOTTSDALE - When you ride your motorcycle 15,000 miles around the perimeter of the United States, you are bound to encounter surprises.
For James Kingstone, the best was the warm reception he got from business partners and ordinary Americans along the way.
"There are millions of people with hearts as big as the country," Kingstone said. "I was cynical, and I'm almost cured."
Kingstone, marketing director for DesignR1 Software in Tempe, left Scottsdale in early April aboard his Yamaha R1 motorcycle. It was partly a publicity tour for Scottsdale-based Sage Software and DesignR1, part a fundraiser for the national network of Hole in the Wall Gang Camps, and part simply seeing the USA.
He climbed off the bike July 22, admitting to a sore butt and a wrist tired of handlebar buzz. Other than the soreness, he escaped any accidents like the one in northern California in which riding companion Garrett Fulton slid and broke his collarbone.
