Frickin Dog did it AGAIN this morning around 6 AM. The great Hunter lay in wait for the evil Skunk to come along. This time the dumbass got skunked bad - this makes two skunks in one weekend. Saturday night I came home to a dead skunk in the yard and a neighborhood reeking. I'm sick of this garbage. Between this morning and Saturday night my entire house and everything in it smells like skunk.
And for those keeping score - Captain has been skunked FIVE times now and only managed to kill two of them - that gives him a record of 2-3. He's officially a loser. My question - Of the 6 houses on my street that back onto the green space, why do the skunks choose to go through the yard that has a 110 pound German Shepard / Wolf / Akita mix? I'm sitting in a coffee shop right now because my house is currently uninhabitable. |

when I was a kid we lived on the edge of my father's/grandfather's orange groves. The groves were flood irrigated once or twice a year. When I was very young the groves extended downhill past our house (owned by other folks), so as the groves uphill were irrigated the water ran downhill through our groves and past our house to the other groves.
A tract of houses was built up to our property line, and a block wall was put up all away across - on the downhill side. So, eventually my dad put in a 'drain pipe' to allow the water that built up against the wall to drain out to the street - probably a hundred feet of square ceramic pipe, maybe 10 inches across. The line was sloped to allow the water to drain, it was about 2 feet below ground level by the time it reached the street. Well, we had a dachshund when I was a kid. I can remember a number of times when we would be awakened by the sound of a screaming in pain animal - our dog would chase skunks which would head for the open drain line, the dachshund would follow right down the line. Both of them would end up near the street, where neither could get out. My dad would have to dig up the 2 feet of dirt, and then break the tile pipe, hoping he was near where the dog (and skunk) were. I have no idea how many times a skunk will spray when trapped - but the dog would be covered, and usually my dad too. Sometimes the skunk was the first to escape through the new hole, sometimes the dog Eventually we got smart enough to put something over the open end of the line when we were not irrigating the groves. |
