How do you turn off Subscriptions so you don't get an email on every update?

How do you turn off Subscriptions so you don't get an email on every update? I see how to do it once it is turned on for a thread. I don't see how to change the default so it doesn't happen to begin with. At least on a Quick Reply it appears to be the default????

User CP > Edit Options > Default Thread Subscription Mode

Use the drop down menu to select instant, daily, weekly, or no email notifications for threads you have posted in.
