Default 2007 5th Gear Whine Video

some folks have had an issue with 5th gear whine on the 2007 bikes.
while i find it no big deal anymore, i made a video of my bike as an example...turn the sound up and listen when i downshift from 6th to 5th gear for the noise. mine is not as excessive as it used to be, and now that i have very loud pipes, it seems even less to bother me.

anyways, here ya go

Hey Speedman, could you add a "Youtube" embedding button so all we have to do is add the ID?

You might be able to add a MySpace and Google video buttons too.

Cheers,

There is a HOWTO coming Bructer. It's pretty straight forward.

It's not so bad, sounds like you got a rock band stuck in the transmission....LOL But seriously, does it cause any probs or is it an asthetic issue (I guess if I had a 6 speed I wouldn't want it to whine either) What is HD's stand on the issue?

This is a byproduct of the way they cut the gears shadow. It's a slight longevity issue, but even more so an annoyance. Second, third, fourth and six gear are heli cut in one direction. This puts a tremendous amount of lateral pressure on the main shaft. First and fifth are straight cut, which doesn't exert lateral pressure, but results in a different/louder noise. They chose first and fifth to be straight cut because those are the two gears that are most frequently used.

HD should have learned from Baker - they went through this years ago. The latest Baker transmissions have every other tooth cut the opposite direction on every gear, which distributes the load more evenly. Their setup sounds better and will have a longer life.

Very good info. Sounds like Baker has done their homework and I would guess HD could infringe on Bakers technology. I appreciate the reply SM. Thx
