I've recently looked at a 1975 FLH, basketcase, with the intention of learning shovels and having another ride. Upon checking the Vin number on the title with the codes for that year, I found that the first two letters are 3D, which indicate a Z-90 HD. The correct letter should be 3H. Has anyone ever ran across a legitimate HD with the Vin mismarked?
The motor and frame stamps match the 3D code that is on the title, but, like I said, the "D" denotes another model. I realize that it is metal and anyone with the right ratio of patience to forgery could alter the numbers with a valid title number to replicate. The numbers on the right hand case are stamped on the flat space in front of the pushrods and can be read facing the rear of the bike. They look as though they have been there a while and there's no evidence of grinding, welding undercut, rotary filing or anything. Is it hot? Is it an AMf mistake? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.... |

I haven't just typed in the vin in the search engine. I used 3 or 4 different databases to confirm that the 3D code was a 90Z and not an FLH...but, I will try it and see what else I can find out and repost, thx

Hope you haven't bought those cases yet,,
Happened to me once. I bought an FX bike in pieces in 1981, Assembled it and rode it for 11 years. Got stopped in Sturgis for speeding and the cop checked the #'s. There was no frame # and the #'s on the engine ( 7A11771H0 ) didn't seem right. Seems that the 7A is a stands for a 125 cc harley 2 stroke. So,, I lost the bike and got a felony charge for altering a VIN. That sucked. There's folks out there who will screw ya over to make a buck.... Make sure you have all #'s in proper order before ya hit the road... |
