I was out riding on sat with a buddy of mine and his oil cap blew off....rigged up a replacement, made it to a dealer and replaced it, 5 minutes down the highway boom!! gone again....it isn't because he had too much oil either.
Now I was looking for some further opinions on this....but I was thinking that his pressure relief valve is not functioning....I believe he is over due for the replacement of his cam chain tensioners, and I am thinking that this may be the cause of his woes.... or possibly a vent line pinched or clogged? he is trying to avoid paying anyone to fix, which means it will more then likely end up in my garage....so now a couple of further questions... Due to the fact that the relief vavle is in the cam backing plate, I told him we might as well replace the tensioners while we are their, with the newer hydraulic ones, or switch to gear drive....now this fella has very little money so we will be doing the cheaper of the two just to get him through... Does anyone have the full list of parts and tools nessesary to replace the cam chain tensioners?(to hydraulic) I have never been in the chest of a twin cam Any other thoughts would be appreciated

Before you start replacing cam plates and such remove your cap on the oil tank and tranny to blow air into the vent tube on the clutch side of the tranny and see if it's plugged..... Sounds like you may have a dirt dobber nest in the rubber tube... Or better yet see if you can remove it for inspection or cleaning.... That may not cure the problem but it's worth a shot ... If you don't remove it to blow air be sure to take the cap off the tranny and oil tank or you may blow your main drive gear seal out..

Here is something to consider. If you are going all the way into the cam chest and are going to replace the oil pump. Gear drive the cams and get rid of the cam chain shoes. This is also the perfect time to upgrade the cams if it has not been done already.

I hear Ya Ram, sorry I didn't reply earlier I didn't see this post....but your absolutely right...having said that he ended up taking it to a shop out on the other side of Toronto that was close to him instead of trailering it out here.....he did have the pump and tensioners replaced(with hydraulic ones) fella told him that these will last a life time...my response "we'll see"...
he didn't have the bucks to upgrade the Cams either....he's picking it up today. |

I believe they started in 2007. I changed mine this past winter for something to do. The old spring tensioners mainly had issue due to the springs grenading. When I pulled mine they had a little wear on them. The new tensioners I put in looked like a different wear pad material. Looks like white UHMW compared to the brown material previous. The other thing to keep in mind is as the chain rides over the tensioner it will get a smother polished finish which is supposed to cause less wear to the tensioner.
