Cool Going back

I'm interested in getting a salvaged bike as a winter project. If I get a model with fuel injection...can I change the intake and put a carb. in place of the injection system? If this won't work....what can I do to get away from the injection system and all that goes with it?

Hi Tommy. Welcome to the site.

If you want to convert a bike from EFI to carb you will have to replace a good chunk of the wiring, the ignition system and possibly the fuel pump. It's do-able, but would be time consuming and expensive.

Good luck with your project.

Cheers,
Speed

Thanks Speed. That's just the info I needed. I'll shop around for an older salvage bike. It'll probably be cheaper anyway. Till later....rich blessings, Tommy

Thanks...good to be here. I already have a project if I don't find something else. It's an Ultima framed Softail with a '90 80ci. engine that I've been working on and riding most of the summer. It really could use a rebuild. I noticed that you're on here a good bit and you seem to know a few things. I need to pick your brain a little and see what you've tried to do to stop or at least slow down the oil from the crankcase ventalation. I've noticed that some folks have run a tube down to the bottom of the frame under the engine and others have left it hooked to the carb. Which will finally saturate the filter and then drip oil on the timeing cover or blow back on the exhaust...just in general make a mess. What have you tried and did it work?

This isn't a direct comparison, but on my 114" Twin Cam I use heavy duty crank vents with a ball valve release that hang down the side of engine to the bottom of the frame. That particular engine always wanted to run with one quart less than a normal Twin Cam, so I added a Baker +1 oil pan last year, but only run 4 quarts of oil in it. If I put 5 quarts in it just pukes out the extra until it finds its own level. And that is my rule of thumb. If an engine finds its happy spot below what the dip stick says, but stays there consistently then that's where I leave it.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Speed
