 Just started my '69 shovel been sitting a while, an oil hose that is routed under the motor which appears to go nowhere is blowing a stream of oil out on the floor. It ran great but I shut it down quick. The hose looks like it could be a blow by tube, ya I know its not a diesel. Anybody know what that hose is for.

The oil is coming from the crank case breather tube.... After sitting for long periods of time the oil in the tank being gravity fed will seep by the ck ball in the oil pump and pool in the bottom of the crank case.. The scavenger part of the oil pump is not designed to return that volume of oil back to the tank.. So on start up it will blow the excess oil out on the ground.... Nothing is wrong just ck your oil level in the tank and add some if it blew out a lot of oil

Thanks for the advice. A mechanic came to the house yesterday. He told me that the ck valve was bad and suggested an oil pump rebuild. Thanks for the advice, I'll run it again and see how it does.

Generally a rebuild will not cure the problem .... Even a brand new shovel outa the box that sits for a long time will do the same thing... Kind of the nature of the beast.... If it does it over a short period of time then the ck ball seat needs to be lapped and that may not cure it.. That's called replacement time...

This "mechanic" also told me that the valve guides would probably need to be replaced with the more modern guides. He seemed to think that it still had the leaded gasoline guides in it. The thing runs pretty darn good. Seems hard to believe that someone had'nt replaced them already. I cant remember the last time I saw leaded gas, also, do you recommend lubing the cylinder before we start it again?

Well unless he/she is superman or have a pair or x-ray glasses they are just guessing at what is in there.. If you are not oil fouling sparkplugs due to worn guides I would leave well enough alone and do that when the need arises... Chances are it's been done by now.. Unless the motor is very low original miles and has no rebuilds which I bet no one knows that answer for sure givin the age of the motor... No I don't think you need to lube the cylinders since you have already started it and most probably you don't need to rebuild your pump because Shoveheads do that little stunt when stored for long periods.. You just need to start it and ride more..
