Default Oil Cooler Question

I am installing an oil temp guage on my Ultra and have to install the sending unit in the incoming oil line into my oil cooler. Does the hot oil come in the top or bottom of the cooler. It was installed at the dealer so I don't have any info on it.
I am thinking the bottom so that the oil rises up thru the cooler rather then falling thru it.
Thanks
BP

Damn - just went and looked at mine. Damn labels just say cooler top and cooler bottom.

But I was under the impression the hot oil went in the top and came out the bottom. The diagram of the oil flow in the Harley book showed the oil "trickling" down through the cooler fins.

I'm not saying this as a word of authority, just wanting you to confirm since what I thought contradicts what you said.

BP, I put a oil temp gauge on my RoadKing, and the sender went in the line from the engine to the oil bag...

I found this on the web, this is another way to do it.

FYI - installed the Harley oil temp gauge BUT used the extra oil pan hole - had to use an adapter bushing. Worked like a charm. I wanted the Harley gauge (with the Harley wording) to match all my other gauges. But, had a real problem with the Harley install. One, they wanted you to cut the bottom oil supply hose out and somehow install a treaded nipple adapter in its place - while somehow getting the hose clamps installed - just seemed like too much work. Two, on top of that, they said you needed to toss the cover plate that covers those hoses. So for a $1.25 bushing I'm much happier. Installing into the extra drain plug whole does not seem as perminent as the orginal install. Since the Harley sensor uses two wires, I was able to put telfon tape and anti-sieze on the bushing adapter. Lastly, Harley wants you to remove the fuel tank (after purging the fuel pressure) - I was able to use a 12 gauge electrical wire (one of the coated wires abour 2 feet long) and fish the temp gauge wire through it. Since I had a Air Temp gauge - you're also able to use the orange wire (becomes the POS on the new oil temp gauge) and the black (GND) - i.e. no need as in the intructions to run those wires back to the fuse panel and grounding plate. One other piece of advice - the plug that was in my Ultra extra drain plug was put in with "red" loctite - make sure to either have a warm engine or in my case I heated the plug with a heat gun for about five minutes. Hope this helps.

Ram you are right the HD unit is quite the Gizmo. I have also seen a lot of sealing problems with it also ..To much stuff in a small area then you gotta pitch the cover LOL

When you have an oil cooler all you have to do is cut the inlet hose and tie a T fitting in there. The sending unit threads into the T. I have heard of that way to install in the pan as well but I don't like the idea of the sending unit being exposed to road debris and such. So I just need to know which line is the incoming line to the cooler. I may request the install instructions from the dealer for the cooler.

I put mine in the way Harley suggested, and only had to cut a bit away from the back of the cover and "Presto", the cover went right back on and it looks stock again..... BTW, there were no leaks, and I get an accurate reading because there is no wind getting to the sender... I did not like the sender under the bike for fear of hitting something, and breaking the sender off.

I am installing it the way HD say to install it. I didn't buy the $75 dollar kit that had a bunch of shit I didn't need in it. I bought the T fitting that comes with that kit for $20. The instructions said to install it in the incoming cooler line. Thats why I need to know if it is the upper or lower hose that brings the oil to the cooler.

I found the info I needed, thanks for all your input. Apparently the oil comes into the bottom port of the cooler. I have attached the PDF file for the adapter kit.
Thanks Again
