Default Brake Maintenance

The other day Coolmaker and I were working on Cartdog71's bike to make sure everything was in working order for him for his trip to Biketoberfest. I was test riding it around the block when all of a sudden the rear brake starts locking down, then it locked up all the way and I slid the back tire about 8-10 feet. Well, needless to say we had to go through the brakes to find out what was wrong.

We drained the old fluid out and replaced it with new fluid. But we soon found out the pin that delivers the pressure against the plunger had fallen out the hole it was supposed to be in and was not letting the plunger return. This in turn would not bleed off the pressure from the caliper. We ended up having to sand the "bur" out of the master cylinder and had it going smooth in no time. This was on a set of "Arlen Ness Big Radius forward controls".

So just a thought for all of y'all that it is a good idea to check your bike over and do some "Preventive Maintenance" while you have the time. Cartdog71's brake lever had been slow to return for awhile, just goes to show that you may not know that something is wrong until it malfunctions completely.

Thanks, good info. I do not know how many folks actually do the preflight before they ride, but it may save an inconvenience (or an ass) later. Better safe than sorry.

Lyndall have a maintenance/service procedure for checking your calipers when changing out your pads. You can check it out here:
