Default No more oil spills

Just thought I would share a small tool idea that I use when changing my oil. I got tired of spilling oil everytime I change the oil filter so Tina and I came up with this idea:

Go to your grocery store and buy a flexible cutting board. Should be very thin and flexible. On a side note I saw these in Petsmart the other day while I was getting dog food. You will have to cut it down to fit but the pics should tell the rest of the story.

Before you remove the filter all the way. Take a rag and wipe the oil down the cutting board and into the catch pan. Remove the filter, wipe again, remove the board and install the new filter. If you take your time, no messes. The main thing to remember is to get the cutting board slid into place past the oil filter mount and slowly remove the filter until the oil starts to drain. Get up, drink a beer and then finish

No mess is a good thing, but keeping the oil off the front motor mount (which is directly below the filter) is even more important. Oil breaks rubber down and the front mount on FL chassis get ruined frequently from oil dripping on them when removing the filter.

Good post. Good tip.

Have done this before, but I like the thin cutting board idea. Good post. 8)
