Default 150/80/16 77v Avon on Road King

Well, Coolmaker had been wanting to install a wider tire on his Road King. The bike came with a 140/90/16 WW stock, so he decided to buy a 150/80/16 77V WW Avon to replace it with. Installation is not that bad, make sure your fender is dead centered and do some modification to the plastic belt guard. The tire has 1/2" clearance between it and the fender sides, but you will have to cut out a section of the plastic belt guard. Being that this was a White Wall Avon the edge of the white wall and the edge where the tire treads stop are the two places where it protrudes the most from the side wall.

You will have to cut out a section from the inside edge of the belt guard that is 2 1/2" wide approximately. Then grind some of the upper section of the belt guard to make enough clearance. When we were finished we had about 1/8"-1/16" clearance between the belt guard and the tire.

By the way, if you install this tire on a Road King you will have to remove your rear brake shoes before installing the tire, this will give you enough clearance to slide the rear caliper back in place. The Avon 77V tire is 3/8" wider than the 77H. This really fills up the fender on the bike! We will post some pics for you guys later. Cool had decided to buy the bead breaker tool and a tire balancer because of the trouble we have of getting to a shop. The tools worked great and they were not that expensive. I will post about the tire tools in a different thread later.

Hey Cool, Venom X 140's is all that will go on the older Roadkings. I'm talking about 04 and older. They have an inch and a half belt and barely enough room for the 140.
I'd love to put a 150 on mine but just ain't no room

04s have the narrower belt and can fit a 150. I have one on mine.

The wide belt is on 03s and earlier.

The 150 x 80 V is a kick ass tire on my bike, rides a hell of allot better !!! As Squirrel said, the Harley tire tools, the bead breaker (JC Whitney) and the tire balancer are the damn easy to use and makes it a snap to change a tire.... Will post some pics soon...
