It may just be me but I am hearing what seems to be more valve train noise than I am used to, it is on my '03 Ultra with 42,000 miles on it. It still loves to cruise at 80 and still runs like it did the day I got it. But this weekend went on a club run and just kept hearing what seemed to be either cam chain or lifter type noise at about 80mph and about 35 to 3700 rpm. Any ideas?

Not sure what yours might be, but ride next to me just once and you'll think the lifter noise on yours purrs like a kitten! Mine's about ready for a full top end rebuild on it - lifter/valve train noise is almost louder than the pipes!

Did you go back to gear driven cams?? If not then your noise could be from end bearings, failed cam support plates, badly worn and disintegrating cam chain tensioners. I know many folks who have gone back to the gear driven cames because of the early wear on the twinkie version...and at about wear your miles are at.
But again it could be your hydraulic lifters, generally the one closer to the front exhaust because it is at more of an angle, and gets less oil. Bottom line is I would get a mech stethoscope and nail down...where the noise is coming from. I hear TFB's...and I can't believe he didn;t tear that fucker down before he left for Texas...gotta be good to be lucky I guess LOL |

Just for shits and giggles and my own curiosity...take your oil filter off, and cut it open...see if you have a bunch of platic parts in there...if it is what most common then you plastic Cam tensioner is getting chewed up, I've heard this happening at as low as 10K. I've also heard them getting replaced at 30K and RE replaced at 42K....MOCO really dropped the ball on that design....make sure to let us know what the noise was, ans what the fix is
