Canada/U.S. Travel - No Passports Needed For Land Crossings

It was announced today that the proposed requirement for Canadians to present a passport when entering the U.S. and for Americans to enter Canada at land crossings after January 31st, 2008 has been dropped.

Flying back and forth still requires a passport.

I found this page on the Canadian Federal government's Web site, which shows the updated information, but haven't found it's counterpart on an American government site.

So much for border security eh? They had given enough warning.

Because the passport system is a joke. It takes eons to get one and it's an onerous proposition. Even with plenty of notice most people on both sides of the border don't have a passport and the economic impact would have been significant due to the decrease in traffic with no discernible increase in security.

There are better solutions like a fast pass, or Nexxus card and I'm sure even better ones will be coming in the near future.
